A safe and successful 2019 Australian Aerobatic Championships was held at Tocumwal, NSW from Tuesday 29 October to Saturday 2 November. In the difficult weather conditions, Australia’s best aerobatic pilots demonstrated their capability and professionalism as they competed for first place rights.

No one handled the challenging conditions as well as Aarron Deliu on his way to becoming the 2019 Australian Unlimited Aerobatic Champion and 2019 Australian Freestyle Aerobatic Champion.

Competition aerobatics is an exciting sport which demands high levels of skill, discipline and concentration. A predetermined sequence of manoeuvres is carried out in a 1km by 1km cube of airspace known as the ‘aerobatic box’. Pilots can fly at different levels of competition ranging in difficulty from Entry to Unlimited, depending on their level of skill and the performance capabilities of their aircraft.

The Australian Unlimited Aerobatic Championship involves a series of flights for each pilot, including; a “Free Known” sequence with figures tailored by the pilot to suit both their aircraft and flying strengths, and three “Free Unknown” flights with figures provided to the pilots hours before flying which they need to arrange into a sequence and fly with no opportunity for practice.

The Australian Freestyle Aerobatic Championship involves a 4-minute display designed by the pilot to demonstrate both their ability and the capability of the aircraft. Flying an Extra 330 LX, Aarron showed his creativity and flare designing and flying his sequence choreographed to a piece of music which received a standing round of applause on completion.

Aarron, who recently represented Australia in the World Aerobatic Championships in France (August 2019) is already in preparation for the 2020 FAI European Aerobatic Championships. Aarron commented, “There is no reason an Australian pilot cannot be in the top 3 at the World Aerobatic Championships”, a line which is supported by the Australian Aerobatic Club.

Further, Aarron has been coaching our future Advance Aerobatics team pilots who intend to compete in the 2020 World Advanced Aerobatic competition. Aarron commented, “Our Australian Advanced Aerobatic team pilots are very talented and will perform well on the international stage”.

The Australian Aerobatic Club Ltd (AAC), was formed in 1970 to foster interest in the sport of competition aerobatics by providing opportunities for pilots to train and compete in a safe and controlled environment.

Aarron Deliu has Won the Australian National Aerobatic Competition in the Advanced Category

Aarron Deliu has Won the Australian National Aerobatic Competition in the Advanced Category at this month’s Australian National Advanced Aerobatic Championships, which were held at Narrowmine Airport, New South Wales, Australia.

While doing so he was able to win across all four flight and also took the Trophy and Award for the highest score across all categories. In the process he also set a new Personal Best

He flew 4 flights in total – 1 known programme and 3 unknown programs – obtaining exceptional scores of 78.39, 77.42, 81.20 and 81.28 respectively. This gave him an overall score of 79.994, which is a new personal record and believed to be a new Record for the Australian National Championship in the advanced category. Previously, the highest score overall was 79.84 in 2016 by Richard Wiltshire.

This year’s Australian Championship was judged by officials from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) using FAI’s judging criteria. This validates the 2018 results against FAI’s internationally-used standards.

On a personal level, Aarron also set a new Personal Best as his previous highest individual program score was 78.9, obtained during the Danubia Cup in July 2018. At Narrowmine, he beat his personal overall best score by 2.162%, also set during the Danubia Cup earlier this year.

“I am very proud of the results”, said Aarron. “They are proof that we are developing good strategies which will see us through to the upcoming international competitions.”

Another element worth mentioning, is that Aarron was unable to use his own aircraft, an Extra 330SC, as it was in transit to Europe. He rented a two-seater Extra 330LX from Red Baron in Bankstown, Sydney, to compete in the championships.

Aarron adds, “I would like to thank the Australian Aerobatic Club for organising such a great event, the other competitors Peter and Stewart for their great flying, Red Baron for allowing me to use their aircraft for the competition, Romain Fhal for his excellent coaching, Extra Aircraft for building such great aircraft as well as our sponsors InCrew and FlyJet. The Lessons we Learned at the WAAC in August 2018

The World Advanced Aerobatic Competition is finished.

We came 17^th overall.

We started off to an average start (8th Position) in program one, after dealing with an issue with the aircraft stalling at a low G due to a fuselage seal issue.

In the Second program I had adapted my flying technique to compensate and was able to place 5^th.

This took us to 4th overall after the 2nd program.

However in the 3^rd I made a large error on one of the figures which resulted in a hard zero. Pulling me from 4^th place to 17^th.

In the final flight I flew extremely conservative and thus only placed 11^th.

Lessons learned

-Fly each flight as a separate flight, forgetting previous results.

-Become more adaptable to mechanical/technical issues.

-Arrange to use our own aircraft for the next world competition and carry spare parts.

-Gain More competition exposure. This is our 3rd competition and we have seen that more experience in competition will help in tackling a lot of the challenges we experienced.

Simply put the other pilots where much better competitors and flew to a great standard.

While we are not happy with the result, we have learnt a lot and figured why this occurred. We will be applying the lessons we have learnt to the next competition and to our training in the lead up.

Australian Pilot wins Championship title at Danubia Cup 2018

For the first time, an Australian pilot has won the Championship title at the 6th International Danubia Powered Aerobatic Cup held from 18 to 22 July 2018 at Strejnic Airfield in Romania.

The sport of Powered Aerobatics is an event sanctioned by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the governing body for world air sports, and is a competition whereby aerobatic pilots fly known and unknown sequences comprising manoeuvresof varying degrees of complexity. The pilots are judged on sequence, accuracy and positioning, which is then multiplied by a difficulty factor. The maneuvers can involve forces of up to 9 times the force of gravity on the pilot along with aircraft speeds of up 350 kmh.

Aarron Deliu, 33, from Perth, WA, clinched first place ranking in all four competition segments to secure a gold medal in each event and the overall gold medal, ahead of 13 other competitors from Romania, Russia, Finland, the UAE and Norway.

This was Aarron’s first time representing Australia in an international aerobatic event. “I am very happy with my performance at the Danubia Cup 2018 and would like to thank the Australian Aerobatics Club (AAC) for their support.” says Aarron Deliu. “I am now looking forward to the upcoming World Advanced Aerobatics Competition (WAAC) in Romania in August where I will again have the privilege to represent Australia.”
